ART AND SCIENCE OF SHARK SCALES
A Family workshop at the National Museum of Natural History
Advisors: Gale Robinson and Colleen Popson
As a fellow in the Internship to Fellowship Program at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, I developed and led my own Art Science Workshop. I utilized skills I learned from my research project in undergrad and my internship with family programs.
I used a human centered design approach, with the objective to help families see similarities between science and art through learning about shark scales. I consulted with museum educators, curators, scientists and tested the activities on the floor of the museum. I created activities so that families could work together to solve what shark the scales came from and to do an art activity. I did program evaluations, and saw that families had a general enjoyment of the workshop, with feedback that kids who were older than 8 needed more stimulation.
It was a great learning experience; I loved sharing art and science with people and showing that these topics are interdisciplinary.
